20 Minutes After You Quit Smoking

By Ray Zimmerman

It's important for a smoker to realize the health benefits that they will be receiving when they quit smoking. Twenty minutes after they stop smoking their body begins to automatically repair itself.

The following benefits are just a few of the many improvements that will take place in the human body when a smoker decides to quit smoking. While reviewing this information, please take into consideration the health hazards that currently exist because of a smoker’s addiction to nicotine.

SHORT TERM HEALTH BENEFITS

Approximately 20 Minutes After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their pulse rate begins to drop.
• Their blood pressure begins to decrease.
• The body temperature of their hands and feet starts to increase.

Approximately 8 Hours After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• The oxygen level in their blood increases and returns to normal.
• The carbon monoxide level in their blood drops and returns to normal.

Approximately 24 Hours After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their chance of having a heart attack decreases.

Approximately 48 Hours After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their ability to smell and taste begins to improve.
• Damaged nerve endings begin to rebuild themselves.

FIRST YEAR HEALTH BENEFITS

Between 2 Weeks and 3 Months After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their lung function increases.
• Walking will now become easier.
• Their circulation begins to improve.

Between 1 Month and 9 Months After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• They will begin to have more energy.
• Sinus congestion will begin to improve.
• Their coughing and shortness of breath will decrease.

Approximately 1 Year After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their risk of coronary heart disease reduces approximately 50%.

LONG TERM HEALTH BENEFITS

Between 5 and 15 Years After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their risk of stroke is approximately the same as a non-smoker.

Approximately 10 Years After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their risk of being diagnosed with an ulcer decreases.
• If they were an average smoker, their risk of lung cancer decreases by almost 50%.
• Their risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, and kidney decreases.

Approximately 15 Years After a Smoker Quits Smoking...

• Their risk of coronary heart disease is approximately the same as a non-smoker.
• Their risk of death is now at the same level of individuals that have never smoked.

As you can see, the majority of health problems that were caused from smoking has been eliminated after 15 years as a non-smoker. That does not mean that the smoker will never have a smoking-related health issue because they quit smoking. What it does mean, is that they will have significantly improved their chances of living longer and they should have fewer smoking-related illnesses during the remainder of their life.

If you smoke, you owe it to yourself and to your family to quit smoking as soon as possible. Remember that the damage that you have already done to your lungs is irreversible and may take its toll in future years. Smoking causes lung cancer and lung cancer can cause your premature death.
