First of all, I would like to thank Julie Stewart for her Intel, “Google Search Features.” Without this information I would not have known that Google had so many shortcuts to securing information on the internet. Although many of Google’s various features were discussed in Julie’s Intel, there are several others that were not mentioned that I would like to bring to your attention. Since I have personally tried all of these search features, I’m going to try to save you some time by providing information that will have you up and running in no time. Whenever you find “state” listed in any of the examples, you can either enter the entire name of the state or the two letter abbreviation for that particular state.
Feature: Current Weather and Forecast by Locality
Examples of Search Input: weather city, state -or- weather (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with the current temperature, weather conditions, wind direction, wind velocity, humidity and a four day forecast.
Feature: Current Stock Quotes by Stock Symbol
Examples of Search Input: msft -or- ebay -or- amzn
Your search will provide you with a graph showing today’s activity for that particular security, the open, the high, the low, the volume, the average volume and the market cap for the day.
Feature: Current Time by Locality
Examples of Search Input: time city, state -or- time (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with the current time, day of the week, time zone and the city and state that was entered in your search.
Feature: Up-to-Date Sport Scores by Teams
Example of Search Input: houston astros
Your search will provide you with the date of the last game played by that team, who the game was played against, the final scores of that game, the date and time of the next game to be played, who the game is to be played against and the game’s location.
Feature: The Time for Sunrise and Sunset by Locality
Examples of Search Input: sunrise city, state -or- sunrise (and) zip code
Examples of Search Input: sunset city, state -or- sunset (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with the time that the sun will rise or set and the exact number of hours and minutes to or since that particular occurrence.
Feature: Book Search by Title of Book or Author’s Name
Examples of Search Input: stephen king -or- walt whitman (and) select “Books” on the navigation menu on the left side of Google’s page.
If your search was for an author, your search will provide you with a list of books that the author wrote. If your search was for a title of a book, your search will provide you with information about that particular book which will include the author’s name, the date the book was published and the total number of pages contained in the book.
Feature: Latest Earthquakes by Locality
Examples of Search Input: earthquake city, state -or- earthquake (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with the last three earthquakes in the vicinity which includes how long ago the earthquake took place, the magnitude of the earthquake and its approximate location.
Feature: Various Unit Conversions
Examples of Search Input: 150 gallons to liters -or- 1245 miles to kilometers
Your search will provide you with the exact conversion that you requested. For example, 150 US gallons = 567.811768 liters and 1245 miles = 2003.63328 kilometers.
Feature: Populations by State or County
Examples of Search Input: population state -or- population county, state
Your search will provide you with a graph of the population changes for approximately 30 years and the current population according to the last census.
Feature: People Search by Profiles
Examples of Search Input: john doe, houston, texas
My searches seemed to provide me with standard search results for the individuals that I was searching for. I was not impressed by this particular feature.
Feature: Definitions of Words Found in the Dictionary
Examples of Search Input: define karate -or- define mammoth
Your search will provide you with the definition of the word and also four links to Wikipedia.org, Dictionary.com, Answers.com and Merriam-Webster.com which will provide you with their own definitions.
Feature: Searches of Businesses by Locality
Examples of Search Input: restaurants city, state -or- restaurants (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with the name of the businesses that are located in the specified area along with their addresses and phone numbers. A Google Map also displays all of the various locations listed. You will be able to search for any type of business. Brand names like Burger King, Sears, McDonalds or Walmart can also be entered in your search.
Feature: The Showtimes of Local Movies
Examples of Search Input: movies city, state -or- movies (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with links that are related to the different movies that are playing in the area searched for. When you click on a link, you will be provided with the length of the movie, its rating, the type of movie (comedy, action, adventure, drama, suspense or thriller), a brief story description, photos and several reviews. The names and addresses of the theaters are also provided that are offering that particular movie. Along with all of this information, you will find a list of the showtimes at each theater.
Feature: Various Health Conditions
Examples of Search Input: pneumonia -or- cancer
Your search will provide you with a description of the condition that you searched for. Links are also provided for Causes, Symptoms, Tests, Prognosis, Complications and Prevention.
Feature: Various Medications
Examples of Search Input: chantix - or - atacand
Your search will provide you with a description of the medication that you searched for. Links are also provided for Side Effects, How to Take, Precautions, Dietary Instructions and Missed a Dose.
Feature: Poison Control Centers by Locality
Examples of Search Input: poison control city, state -or- poison control (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with a national emergency phone number for poison control as well as a local number and a map of its location if one is found in your area.
Feature: Suicide Prevention by Locality
Examples of Search Input: suicide prevention city, state -or- suicide prevention (and) zip code
Your search will provide you with links and phone numbers to local associations that deal with suicide prevention.
Feature: Find Local Centers that Provide Flu Vaccines
Examples of Search Input: H1N1
Since this is not flu season, up-to-date information was not available and the quality of the search results could not be verified. Currently a link is provided to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions.
Feature: Tracking Current Airline Flights in the United States
Example of Search Input: united airlines 450
Simply enter the name of the airline and the flight number that you would like to inquire about. Your search will provide you with the following information.
• The date of the flight.
• The city, the airport and the estimated time of departure.
• The city, the airport and the estimated time of arrival.
• The current status of the flight.
• Links that will provide you with additional information.
Feature: The Conversion of Currencies
Examples of Search Input: 100 USD in GBP -or- 500 EUR in USD
Your search will provide you with an exact answer to your inquiry and also provide you with a conversion calculator. Simply change either amount and your answer will be immediately displayed.
Feature: Maps Throughout the United States
Examples of Search Input: city, state map -or- zip code (and) map
Your search will provide you with a small map and various links pertaining to various interests in that general vicinity. If you click on the map, a larger Google Map will be displayed that will allow you to zoom in or out for preferred viewing. As with all Google Maps, you will find additional information about the area listed on the left side of the map.
Feature: Fill in the Blank to Ask a Question
Examples of Search Input: henry ford built * -or- the first man on the moon was *
Your search will provide you with the answer to your question and then some. If you enter your question on Google’s page instead of from a search bar, a drop down menu will appear with various possibilities that are related to your question.
Feature: Tracking Packages of Three Major Carriers
Example of Search Input: 1Z0000000000000000
Your search will provide you with a link that will automatically take you to the proper carrier which will provide immediate tracking information based on the tracking number that you entered. If you enter the tracking number above, you will see that the link will take you directly to UPS.
Feature: United States Patent Numbers
Example of Search Input: patent 4555555
Your search will provide you with a link that will display information for that particular patent which may possibly include supported drawings.
