How to Remove a Fishing Hook From Your Finger
By Ray Zimmerman
Any individual who spends a lot of their time on the water fishing, will sooner or later end up with a barbed hook in their finger or hand. Years ago, your only alternative was to go to the emergency room and have the hook removed but this has now changed. About twenty years ago, this is exactly what happened to me. I was bass fishing with my wife. Whenever my wife would catch a bass, being the gentleman that I was, I would remove the fish from her lure so she wouldn’t get hooked accidentally. Whenever my wife caught a fish, she would simply raise the fish out of the water with her rod and swing it towards me so I could remove the fish for her. On this one particular day, about the time that I reached for her fish, it decided to jump and to my surprise I had a treble hook from her topwater bait stuck in my finger. I thought I might be able to gently remove the hook from my finger, but the barb on the hook would not allow me to do so. After sitting there for a several minutes wondering what I should do, I realized that I would have to go to the emergency room at one of our local hospitals and have the hook removed. So I wouldn’t look too stupid walking into the hospital with a six inch fishing lure dangling from my finger, I decided to remove the hook from the lure. That way it wasn’t so noticeable. Of course that put an end to our fishing trip. When I got to the emergency room, I had to wait about an hour to see the doctor. All the while thinking about how he was actually going to remove that hook. When I finally got to see the doctor guess what he asked me when he saw that treble hook in my finger. Yep, you guessed it… “Were you fishing?” I really wanted to tell him, “No, I was squirrel hunting!” Well, to make a long story short, with the aid of a scalpel the doctor had that fishing hook out of my finger in no time. Years later, I happened to hear about a new hook removal method that was being used by many fishermen with great success. I only wish that I was privy to that information when I got that treble hook stuck in my finger. It’s a simple, straight-forward way to remove a fishing hook from your finger or hand in just a minute. I would like to share that information with you incase you find yourself in a similar situation one day while fishing. Disclaimer: I have never used this hook removal method personally. Needless to say, I do not have first hand knowledge of how well it works. I have read articles that document this method and I have seen videos on YouTube as to how effective this technique actually is. It is strictly a matter of choice on your part if you want to utilize this information in the future or not. If you agree that I will not be held financially liable for your actions because I provided this information, please continue. If not, please don't read any further. The images that I have provided at the bottom of this article demonstrates this unique hook removal technique. Depending on the location of the embedded hook, you may need the aid of another individual to remove the fishing hook. Diagram A... Displays a fishing hook that is embedded in a finger. Diagram B... Double 20 lb. fishing line and loop it around the hook. Diagram C... Push the shank of the fishing hook down tightly against the finger in the direction of the arrow which will allow the barb of the hook to be quickly and easily removed. Diagram D... Remove the hook with a quick jerk on the fishing line in the direction shown. If there are multiple hooks on a fishing lure, you should remove all of the other hooks to avoid any further injury when removing the embedded hook. If you are dealing with a treble hook, it would be advisable to remove the barbs on the other two hooks before proceeding. I hope that this information is beneficial to other individuals that enjoy fishing. You just never know when an accident like this will occur.

From what I have seen on YouTube, it's like pulling a loose tooth out of a young child's mouth. Like a string to a doorknob. Give it a quick jerk and it's all over.
It looks like it might work. I hope that I never have to test out the method.

I've seen it done on YouTube several times. It seems to work without a lot of pain. One of the videos was on a commercial fishing boat and one of the crew had about a 3-4" hook stuck all the way into his hand. Came out without a hitch!
Revenge of the fish!
