How to Select a Knowledgeable Realtor
By Ray Zimmerman
When you purchase a home, you will be making one of, if not, the largest investments of your entire life. If you are currently considering purchasing a new or used home, you must now ask yourself the question, “Which realtor will I use?” That is not as simple a question as you might think. There is a tremendous amount to take into consideration when you’re going to select a realtor to represent you when buying or selling a property. Quite often, real estate companies will provide very informative websites that will list pertinent information about each of their realtors. If this is the case, you should not have any difficulty with your research. If you know of some individuals that have recently bought or sold a property, simply ask them if they would recommend their realtor. If they are happy to do so, simply ask them how they would rate this realtor on a scale of one to ten. If you don’t get a ten, keep looking. Remember, this could possibly be the most important purchase of your life. Don’t short-cut the process and select the first realtor that comes along. These are some of the things that you should take into consideration before selecting a realtor. • What type of formal education does the realtor have? • What are the realtor’s credentials? • How many years of real estate experience does the realtor have? • Does the realtor have experience in both selling and listing properties? • What are the realtor’s actual areas of expertise? • How does the realtor advertise their listings? • What form of continued education has the realtor pursued? • Has the realtor received company awards for sales achievement? Most realtors are members of several associations because they take pride in what they do and want to support the various associations that try to provide the real estate industry with positive support. The following information provides a few examples of typical memberships that a realtor might possess. • Member of the Local Board of Realtors • Member of the State Board of Realtors • Member of a Local Chamber of Commerce Some realtors specialize in different areas of the real estate business. Make sure that the realtor that you select has the expertise that you are looking for. The following list will provide you with some of the different areas that realtors may be experienced in. • Residential Properties • Waterfront Properties • Investment Properties • Commercial Properties • Vacant Land • Relocations • Foreclosures If you’re interested in buying a home on the water, make sure that the realtor that you are going to select has had sufficient experience in both residential and waterfront properties. If your company is going to transfer you to another location, make sure that your realtor is well experienced in all of the various aspects of relocations. In conclusion, I can not emphasize enough just how important it is for you to thoroughly do your homework before making a decision that might adversely effect the purchase or sale of a property. When everything is said and done, you simply want to make the best deal possible regardless if your buying or selling. If you have chosen the right realtor, they will make sure to negotiate the best deal available.
