Mastering the Game of Blackjack
By Ray Zimmerman
Most people know how to play blackjack, but only a very small percentage of those individuals actually know how to play the game successfully. The basic rules of blackjack are fairly simple and easy to learn but utilizing proper blackjack strategy and understanding the mathematics involved is considerably more difficult. If you enjoy playing blackjack, why not devote enough time to master the game and become a minority blackjack player? Most individuals that play blackjack are considered to be part of the majority. A minority blackjack player simply wins more than he loses! Needless to say, the majority of blackjack players generally lose. Consider how much you will most likely lose playing blackjack over the next twenty years. For some players, that could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Why not reverse that outcome? Basic blackjack strategy has been around for quite a few years now and there are a few players that unconditionally adhere to this strategy whenever they are playing blackjack. These players know that blackjack is a game of mathematics and is not a game of emotions. The one thing that many of these players don’t realize is that there’s a new blackjack strategy available that will reduce the casino’s edge on the game. There has been twenty-four changes to the basic blackjack strategy and those individuals that are utilizing the new strategy will win more frequently. If you are serious about becoming a minority blackjack player, you will need to find a new blackjack strategy chart and print a copy for future reference. Casinos will usually allow players to refer to a strategy chart while playing blackjack. Until you have learned the new strategy, it would be a good idea to take your strategy chart with you to the casino so you can refer to it while playing blackjack. As previously stated, blackjack is a game of mathematics. The new blackjack strategy has been proven to be absolutely accurate and will improve your profitability at the blackjack tables. If you want to win, make sure that you do not stray from this strategy while playing because of your emotions. If you don’t know the basics of counting cards, you will not realize when it's to your best advantage to increase or lower your bets. You also need to know when a deck or shoe provides the dealer with the greatest advantage, which is your cue to leave the table. If you are playing according to blackjack strategy and you continue to play while the dealer has a distinct advantage, you have an excellent chance of losing your hard-earned dollars. Before playing blackjack in any casino, you should first determine which casino will provide you with the greatest opportunity to win. This can be easily accomplished by reviewing the blackjack rules in several casinos and then using a reliable blackjack calculator to determine which is the best casino to play at. It doesn’t make any sense to play at a casino that has a 2.5% edge when you could play at a casino that has a .5% edge over the player. Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the amount that you are paid when you have a blackjack (21). Some games will pay 3 to 2 for a blackjack and others will pay 6 to 5. If you are playing single deck blackjack, a 3 to 2 payout, which pays $37.50 on a $25 bet, equates to 0.063% edge for the casino. A 6 to 5 payout, which pays $30 on a $25 bet, equates to a 1.331% edge for the casino. A 6 to 5 payout is actually 21.127 times greater than a 3 to 2 payout. Under no circumstances should you ever consider playing blackjack that only provides a 6 to 5 payout. Some casinos allow the player to split hands up to 4 times and other casinos will only allow you to split hands twice. For example, suppose you were dealt a pair of 9s and you split your hand and you got another 9 on both of those hands. If you were allowed to resplit each of those hands, you would then have 4 hands in play. Casinos that allow up to 4 hands in single deck blackjack will have a house edge of 0.063% and those that only allow 2 hands have a house edge of 0.501%. Always play in a casino that allows the players to split hands up to 4 times. Why fight the odds? As you can readily see, there's a lot to learn if you are really going to master the game of blackjack. If you happen to play a lot of blackjack, the financial rewards are well worth the effort spent learning how to beat the casinos at their own game. You have a better chance to win when playing blackjack at a casino with an insignificant house edge. Always remember that casinos are in the business of making money. Your money!
