Quit Smoking Withdrawal Symptoms

By Ray Zimmerman

Whenever you quit smoking, you will be faced with withdrawal symptoms during your recovery period. It is essential that you thoroughly understand what you may be confronted with if you wish to maintain a healthier lifestyle as a non-smoker.

You will experience both psychological and physical symptoms during recovery. Lets discuss the difference between these two types of symptoms. Psychologically, you are mentally confronted with giving up your addiction to nicotine which may be considerably more intense then you may currently imagine. Physically, your body will be reacting to the absence of nicotine which was previously introduced to your body at somewhat regular intervals. Both of these symptoms must be successfully dealt with if you hope to remain smoke-free.

No one has ever said that It would be easy to quit smoking after being addicted to nicotine for several years. It took some time for your body to adjust to the presence of smoke in your lungs and nicotine in your blood stream and it will take your body some time to adjust to the lack of nicotine once you have stopped smoking. It has been documented that smoking can be harder to quit than heroin or cocaine.

When you quit smoking, some of the physical and psychological symptoms will no longer exist after seventy-two hours, while other symptoms will generally dissipate over a two-to-four week period. Every individual that quits smoking does not experience the same symptoms during the recovery from their nicotine addiction. For the most part, the majority of symptoms will be eliminated within thirty days after you have quit smoking. The severity and the duration of the symptoms is directly related to how much an individual smokes each day and the length of time that they have actually been smoking.

The symptoms that unveil themselves when you quit smoking might seem quite alarming if you don’t thoroughly understand the recovery process. The following list will provide you with some of the possible symptoms that you may encounter when you stop smoking.

• Anxiety
• Constipation
• Coughing
• Depression
• Drowsiness
• Dry Throat
• Fatigue
• Frustration
• Headaches
• Hunger
• Irritability
• Insomnia
• Lack of Concentration
• Loneliness
• Nasal Drip
• Nausea
• Restlessness
• Short Tempered
• Stomachache
• Sweating
• Tension

The majority of symptoms that are listed above can generally be overcome by some form of relaxation. Utilizing a basic relaxation exercise is quite beneficial during recovery. Quite walks, warm baths, a short nap and soothing music are all simple ways to help you relax. Establishing a daily exercise program is definitely advantageous when you quit smoking. Always make sure that you get plenty of rest while any of these symptoms are ongoing.

During the first few weeks after you quit smoking, try not to create too heavy a workload on yourself and try to avoid as much additional stress as possible. Make sure that you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially water and fruit juices. Try to refrain from drinking anything with caffeine after six o’clock in the evening. By drinking six-to-eight glasses of water each day, you will help to flush nicotine and toxins from your body which will help to eliminate some of these symptoms.

Whenever hunger strikes, always drink water and low calorie liquids first. If that does not suffice, eat a low calorie snack like celery, carrots, apples, pretzels, popcorn and melba toast. By doing so, you will avoid gaining weight during your recovery period. Eat a salad with your meals if at all possible. Make sure that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables which will help to create a well-balanced diet.

Remember, the symptoms that you'll experience after you have quit smoking may only last a few days or could possibly last two-to-four weeks. The temporary discomfort of these symptoms is well worth the healthier lifestyle that you will be experiencing as a non-smoker. The alternative is not very good if you continue to smoke.

The tip about hydration is a good one. Dehydrated people are cranky anyway, without suffering from nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
