The Major Fishing Spots in Louisiana

I have recently been part of a special project in Louisiana. My involvement included the compiling of information about the best fishing spots in the state. Louisiana provides an abundance of fishing, hunting and wildlife that brings numerous visitors to Louisiana each year. Tourism is a major source of income for all types of businesses in the state. The following list provides basic information for the top thirty fishing locations in Louisiana. This information will be quite valuable for any fishing enthusiast in the state or for any individual planning to visit Louisiana in the future. If you have not previously visited Louisiana, give a trip to the Pelican State a little consideration. If you enjoy fishing or hunting waterfowl, you will be in store for an absolutely magnificent trip. Anacoco Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 2,400 (3.75 Square Miles) Parish: Vernon Location: Located west of Leesville, LA Fishing Information: This lake was created in 1951 and was stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. If you enjoy the peace and quite of a small lake, you will really enjoy fishing here. Bayou D' Arbonne Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 15,250 (23.8 Square Miles) Parishes: Union and Lincoln Location: Located southwest of Farmerville, LA Fishing Information: This lake is basically an open water lake, with a few areas of dead timber and is known for it's great bass, bream, and crappie fishing. Black Bayou Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 3,968 (6.2 Square Miles) Parish: Caddo Location: Located between Vivian and Hosston, LA Fishing Information: This is a scenic lake with plenty of cypress trees and excellent bass fishing. Can be accessed from a small park at the dam which is located off of LA Hwy 2. Black Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 7.000 (10.9 Square Miles) Parish: Natchitoches Location: Located east of Campti, LA Fishing Information: This lake is 1.8 miles wide and 5 miles long with plenty of cypress trees. Amenities include fishing, campgrounds, and several nice boat ramps. Bundick Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 1,500 (2.3 Square Miles) Parish: Beauregard Location: Located southwest of Deridder and north of Dry Creek, LA Fishing Information: The upper portion of the lake contains plenty of dead timber and stumps. The lake produces catches of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Caddo Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 25,400 (39.6 Square Miles) Parish: Caddo Location: Located on Texas/Louisiana Border Fishing Information: Cypress trees and lily pads provide exceptional fishing for 6-11 pound bass. This lake also offers excellent fishing for bream, crappie, hybrid stripers, and catfish. Calcasieu Lake (AKA: Big Lake) - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 38,400 (60 Square Miles - 5 Miles Wide x 12 Miles Long) Parish: Calcasieu and Cameron Location: Located south of Lake Charles, LA Fishing Information: Catches include redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, crabs, and shrimp. Caney Creek Reservoir - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 5,000 (7.8 Square Miles) Parish: Jackson Location: Located southwest of Chatham, LA Fishing Information: This lake is an open lake having many pockets and coves, with few obstructions. Stocked with approximately one million Florida largemouth bass. State Record bass have been caught weighing over 15 pounds. Catahoula Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 26,000 (40.6 Square Miles) Parish: La Salle Location: Located south of Jena, LA Fishing Information: This lake supports large populations of migratory waterfowl and this lake is better known for duck hunting, but still seems to be a popular lake to fish at. Cheniere Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 3,600 (5.6 Square Miles) Parish: Ouachita Location: Located southwest of Monroe, LA Fishing Information: Anyone interested in fishing Cheniere Lake should consult with local guides and resources before heading out to the lake. Chico State Park - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 2,000 (3.1 Square Miles) Parish: Evangeline Location: Located north of Ville Platte, LA Fishing Information: The amenities include cabins, lodges, group camps, a conference center, hiking trails, and a pool. Boat ramps are located at the North and South Landings of the park. Cocodrie Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 6,000 (9.3 Square Miles) Parishes: Rapides and Evangeline Location: Located east of Glenmora, LA Fishing Information: This lake is wooded and it has been reported to be a good lake to fish at with several access points. You can expect to catch largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill. Cross Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 8,575 (13.4 Square Miles) Parish: Caddo Location: Located west of Shreveport, LA Fishing Information: Moss covered cypress trees line the banks of this open lake which is a great fishing and recreational boating lake. Excellent fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, red ear sunfish, and catfish. Cypress Black Bayou Reservoir - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 3,875 (6 Square Miles) Parish: Bossier City Location: Located east of Benton, LA Fishing Information: This facility offers camping, fishing, swimming, picnic shelters, a nature center, and a petting zoo. There is plenty to do for the entire family. Grand Lake - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 42,000 (65 Square Miles) Parish: Cameron Location: Located south of Lake Arthur, LA Fishing Information: Lake Arthur, five miles to the north, flows down into Grand Lake and the fishing between the lakes is reported to be good. Expected catches include largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish. Henderson Lake (AKA: Henderson Swamp) - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 5,000 (7.8 Square Miles) Parish: St. Martin Location: Located east of Lafayette, LA Fishing Information: This lake is home to largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and many other species. Cypress trees and water hyacinth are scattered throughout. You can definitely enjoy a natural south Louisiana setting when fishing on this beautiful lake! Indian Creek Reservoir - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 2,200 (3.4 Square Miles) Parish: Rapides Location: Located east of Woodworth, LA Fishing Information: This lake has excellent facilities, including cabins, camp sites, and picnic areas. Activities include fishing, hiking, and swimming. Fishing is considered good for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill. Lac des Allemonds - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 12,000 (18.75 Square Miles) Parish: St. John the Baptist and Lafourche Location: Located west of Destrehan, LA Fishing Information: This lake is about 10' deep and surrounded by fresh marshes and cypress swamps. The catches include largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish. Lake Maurepas - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 58,000 (90.6 Square Miles) Parish: Livingston Location: Located west of Akers, LA Fishing Information: This lake is surrounded by cypress swamps and is primarily a freshwater lake. Depending on the winds, water levels and tides, Lake Maurepas can also hold saltwater fish. Just think, the best of both worlds at the same scenic location! Lake Palourde - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 11,520 (18 Square Miles) Parish: St. Martin Location: Located northeast of Morgan City, LA Fishing Information: Due to past hurricanes and the salt water they brought, it's unknown at this time what the fishing conditions are. Lake Pontchartrain - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 614,000 (960 Square Miles - 40 Miles Wide x 24 Miles Long) Parish: St. Tammany and Plaquemines Location: Located north of New Orleans, LA Fishing Information: Catches include redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, croakers, crabs, and shrimp. This is undoubtedly one of the largest saltwater lakes in the South. Lake Salvador - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 53,000 (82.8 Square Miles) Parish: St. Charles, Jefferson, and Lafourche Location: Located southwest of Morrero, LA Fishing Information: Typical catches include largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish. There have been recent reports of redfish in the lake. If you have information, please email us. Lake Verret - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 14,500 (22.6 Square Miles) Parish: Assumption Location: Located west of Napoleonville, LA Fishing Information: This is a shallow lake with stands of beautiful cypress trees that dot its shoreline. Catches include largemouth bass, bluegill, bream, and catfish. The lake has been restocked with Florida bass. Lake Bistineau - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 17,200 (26.8 Square Miles) Parishes: Bossier and Bienville Location: Located east of Shreveport, LA Fishing Information: This lake is one of the best known lakes in Louisiana for crappie fishing and also yields fine catches of redear sunfish, bluegill, catfish, and largemouth bass. Lake Claiborne - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 6,400 (10 Square Miles) Parish: Claiborne Location: Located east of Homer, LA Fishing Information: This lake offers excellent fishing which includes largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bream, and catfish. Sabine Lake - Southern Louisiana Total Acres: 62,700 (98 Square Miles - 7 miles wide x 14 miles long) Parish: Cameron Location: Located on Texas/Louisiana Border Fishing Information: This lake connects directly to the Gulf of Mexico and catches include redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, crabs, and shrimp. Saline Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 7,600 (11.8 Square Miles) Parishes: Natchitoches and Winn Location: Located east of Clarence, LA Fishing Information: This lake is primarily wooded and is home to good populations of largemouth bass, crappie, and sunfish. Toledo Bend Reservoir - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 181,600 (283 Square Miles) Parishes: Sabine and DeSoto Location: Located on the Texas/Louisiana Border Fishing Information: The lake is routinely stocked with Florida Largemouth's and Striped Bass. This lake has over 1200 miles of shoreline to fish. There are plenty of boat landings, marinas, camping facilities, parks, restaurants, and lodging facilities available. Toledo Bend is undoubtedly one of the finest lakes in Louisiana to fish at. Vernon Lake - Central Louisiana Total Acres: 4,200 (6.5 Square Miles) Parish: Vernon Location: Located southwest of Anacoco, LA Fishing Information: This lake is approximately 1.5 miles wide and 5.5 miles long. This lake provides nice catches of bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. Wallace Lake - Northern Louisiana Total Acres: 2,500 (3.9 Square Miles) Parish: Caddo Location: Located south of Shreveport, LA Fishing Information: The lake is used primarily for fishing. Access to the lake is on the north side from Wallace Lake Road and Norris Ferry Road. Catches include largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish.
