The Truth About Secondhand Smoke

By Ray Zimmerman

Warning! It has been documented that there are over Four Thousand chemical agents in tobacco products and over Four Hundred of these agents have been discovered to be poisonous. For example, one single drop of nicotine is more lethal than arsenic, strychnine or snake venom.

Exposure to secondhand smoke is also known as passive smoking or involuntary smoking. In the United States, the primary source of secondhand smoke is from cigarettes... then pipes, then cigars. Exposure to secondhand smoke usually occurs in the home, in the car or at the workplace. You will also find secondhand smoke in various public areas such as restaurants, bars and recreational areas.

Secondhand smoke which is also referred to as environmental tobacco smoke, comes from two main sources.

Mainstream Smoke... is the smoke that is exhaled by a smoker.

Sidestream Smoke... is the smoke from the burning end of a tobacco product.

Although many states have enacted laws to protect their citizens from secondhand smoke, the struggle is not yet over. Since I reside in Louisiana, I have first-hand knowledge of the laws that have been recently enacted. The state has passed laws which do not allow individuals to smoke in most enclosed areas. At the present time, there are two exceptions to this law. Smoking is still being permitted in bars and also in casinos.

Louisiana is now considering the possibilities of not allowing individuals to smoke in bars, but they did not include casinos in there current proposal. I can only presume that casinos are providing the state with so much revenue that the politicians don’t want to upset the apple cart. Employees and those individuals that entertain in casinos should not be the only individuals in the state that are forced to work under these conditions. Over a period of time, secondhand smoke can cause countless health problems for these individuals and lets not forget... premature death.

Secondhand smoke contains the same harmful chemicals as the smoke that is inhaled by the smoker. Just think, over 50 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer. True, you have a right to place these poisons in your body, but do you have the right to force non-smoking individuals near you to inhale these same cancer-causing chemicals? The U.S. Surgeon General and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have both classified secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen which is a cancer-causing agent. Its a proven fact that inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in those individuals that have never smoked.

Children that are exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, which is commonly referred to as SIDS. They also have a significantly higher risk of ear infections, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. The children that are exposed to secondhand smoke tend to cough, wheeze and feel breathless at times. There's also evidence that secondhand smoke has a direct effect on children's learning development and their behavior. Children definitely deserve a better start in life than this!

Non-smokers who are breathing secondhand smoke at home or at work, are at a higher risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. The effects of second hand smoke, even for brief periods of time, can range from eye, nose and throat irritations to headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Secondhand smoke can seriously intensify symptoms in individuals with allergies or asthma. Don't ever be fooled. Secondhand smoke can lead to serious, life-threatening health problems for any non-smoker that in forced to inhale the poisons and carcinogens from cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Non-smokers should have a choice! Would you not agree?
