Tips to Improve PR

By Ray Zimmerman

There are several things that the average individual can do to improve the PR of their website without having a formal education in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It seems that everything today revolves around Google since they are the leading search engine worldwide.

When you are thinking about creating a new website, it would be a good idea to open an account with Google and utilize their Keyword Tool which is part of Google’s AdWords. You can quickly find out if your primary keywords of your potential website are getting sufficient searches each month on Google. If not, search for additional related keywords until you find something that you can easily build around.

For an example, my website is www.crawfish-crawfish.com. Before I selected that domain name, I researched the keywords that would be associated with my Authentic Cajun Recipes cookbook. I found out that the word "crawfish" which is closely related to anything Cajun, was getting approximately 245,000 search requests per month on a local basis. When I checked "cajun recipes" I found that there were 22,200 search requests per month and "authentic cajun recipes" only got 140. Needless to say, if I wanted to create a website around my cookbook, I would need to have a website that was built around the terms "crawfish" and "cajun recipes". This would provide me with the best opportunity to secure visitors that were searching on Google. Lets not forget that additional visitors will also be coming from search results on Yahoo! and bing.

When I was trying to decide on a domain name, I knew that "crawfish" had to be part of that name. After searching for domain names for over two hours, I decided that having "crawfish" listed in my domain name twice would be advantageous since the search results are automatically selected by the search engines.

Google’s Insights for Search stated that the top search term that was related to "crawfish" was "crawfish boil." If you simply take a look at my website, you can see that I have devoted an entire section to boiling crawfish, which includes the following.

* Boiling Crawfish (boiling-crawfish.html)
* How to Purge Crawfish (how-to-purge-crawfish.html)
* How to Boil Crawfish (how-to-boil-crawfish.html)
* Boiling Crawfish Recipes (boiling-crawfish-recipes.html)
* Crawfish Dipping Sauces (crawfish-dipping-sauces.html)
* How to Peel Crawfish (how-to-peel-crawfish.html)

The keywords for these pages were also checked with Google’s Keyword Tool for popularity. As you can see the names of the links are identical to the html. I would certainly recommend doing this throughout a website which will be quite beneficial.

I then decided to add another section that would be devoted to popular crawfish recipes to add strength to my website when crawled by the search engines. I created eleven additional pages for the cause. Again, using Google’s Keyword Tool, I found that the name of a recipe will produce better search results if the term "recipe" was added to the name of a particular recipe ("Crawfish Etouffee Recipe" versus "Crawfish Etouffee"). I did not have room on my drop down menu to list the entire name, but the title to each page and the html are exactly the same.

For the most part, I would recommend that your meta tag title contain the exact same title that is used on your page and on all links leading to that page. Now, after I said that, you really have to take a look at my website to see what I did.

The actual title of my page name is Crawfish - Crawfish - Crawfish. My sub-title is Boiling Crawfish and Crawfish Recipes. The file name to the image below my sub-title is crawfish-crawfish.gif and the Alt tag is Crawfish - Crawfish - Crawfish. I have two crawfish on my header... file names crawfish-crawfish-1.gif and crawfish-crawfish-2.gif. Both of those Alt tags are crawfish-crawfish Even though I used an image for my header, I added the name of my website in text which is www.Crawfish-Crawfish.com that the search engines would also pick up.

If you will view the source code of my page, you will see that my meta tag title is Crawfish - Crawfish | Boiling Crawfish and Crawfish Recipes | Crawfish - Crawfish. My meta tag abstract is exactly the same. Not counting keywords and content, I have 32 "crawfish" terms listed. Some SEO companies may say that is too many, but I would have to disagree with them. I published this website on March 14, 2011. This website is now 35 days old and if you search Google for "crawfish-crawfish", you will find two of my pages on the first page of Google’s search results and "Authentic Cajun Recipes" is now on page two. I have to give the links that I have on qondio partial credit for these results.

I have not said all this to brag on myself. I have documented this information to help others improve their PR and the search results that they get on Google. I sincerely hope that this is helpful to all that read this Intel.

I'm assuming you eventually want to rank for "crawfish" as opposed "crawfish-crawfish"? In that case be careful with the overuse of the same keyword, as Google have been cracking down on that recently. Also, none of what you are doing helps with PageRank, though it does work for PR (public relations).

I have tried many different ways to get better search results on Google and this, coupled with Qondio seems to be working fine. I was always told to never use the same keyword more than 3 times in my meta tags. If you check the website that gets almost all of the top spots for the search term "boiling crawfish" and its related keywords, you will see that he has "crawfish" is his keywords 9 times. I'm about to try that out in the next couple of months and see if that makes a difference. Of course, he has Google ads going across the top of all of his pages and I'm not sure if he doesn't get some clout from Google because of those ads.

Most of my "crawfish" related keywords are currently getting search results on Google's pages (1-8). Don't you think that is pretty good for a website that has been up for only 5 weeks. I know that Google and the others have already crawled my site, but up to this point I have not sumbitted my website to any of the search engines. I will not be prepared to do that for another couple of months.

Thanks again!
