Win at Blackjack by Counting Cards

By Ray Zimmerman

Many individuals feel that learning how to count cards will be just to difficult to master. Well, let’s face reality. Utilizing the right software program will enable you to learn how to count cards in a relatively short period of time. If you never become fast enough to handle all of the aspects of counting cards, you will definitely become a better blackjack player and win more often when playing in the casinos.

There are quite a few different card counting systems that have been tried over the years and one stands out above all the rest. It's the Hi-Low Card Counting System. If you are going to purchase a software program to learn how to count cards, make sure that it teaches this particular system and that it is totally automated with manual and automatic modes. You will also need a program that will teach you how to bet conservatively so you will not be detected as a card counter.

The majority of available software programs do not offer all of these features and will not provide you with an outstanding learning experience. You need to be able to interact with a card counting program so you will learn how to count cards as fast as a blackjack dealer can deal out the cards to a full table of players.

As you most likely know, casinos do not allow known card counters to play in their casinos. A good surveillance team can usually spot a card counter by the swing in his aggressive betting strategies. That is why it is so important to learn both the aggressive and conservative betting strategies so you will not be detected as a card counter. Those individuals that learn how to become good card counters can profit tremendously by using their card counting talents at the blackjack tables.

Before we go any further, let’s clear up one very important bit of information. Card counting is not against the law! When an individual learns how to count cards they are simply eliminating the casino’s edge and providing themselves with a better opportunity to win. Since various entities spend millions and sometimes billions of dollars building magnificent casinos, they resent the fact that someone has the ability to beat them at their own game. Personally speaking, I like nothing more than to take some of the casino’s money home with me.

I’m now going to provide you with the basics of the Hi-Low Card Counting System. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can take this information and become a good card counter. As previously mentioned, it takes an outstanding software program and some work on your part to learn this system thoroughly.

The Hi-Low Card Counting System

The following values are assigned to each individual card.

• Card Value: +1... is assigned to all 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s

• Card Value: 0..... is assigned to all 7s, 8s and 9s

• Card Value: -1.... is assigned to all 10s, Face Cards and Aces

When each of the cards are dealt, you will need to keep track of the total card values by adding or subtracting 1 from the total. If a card is dealt with a zero value, the total remains unchanged. When playing, you will need to make strategy and betting decisions that are strictly based on your current total.

Factors to Take into Consideration

• Whenever the player’s total count is near zero, the deck or the shoe is considered to be neutral. This means that neither the player nor the dealer has an advantage over the other. At that point in time, the player will have a fifty-fifty chance of winning or losing.

• Whenever the "Plus Count" is high, the player will have a definite advantage over the dealer. At this time, many of the low value cards (2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s) have already been dealt and a high percentage of high value cards (10s, Face Cards and Aces) still remain in the deck or shoe. When this situation exists, the player should increase his bets as the "Plus Count" continues to increase positively (i.e. +2 then +3).

• Whenever the "Minus Count" is high, the dealer will have a definite advantage over the player. At this time, many of the high value cards (10s, Face Cards and Aces) have already been dealt and a high percentage of low value cards (2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s) still remain in the deck or shoe. When this situation exists, the player should reduce his bets as the "Minus Count" continues to increase negatively (i.e. -2 then -3). If the "Minus Count" reaches -5, the player should stop playing or even consider leaving the table since the dealer now has a major advantage and the player’s chances of losing has greatly increased.

• As the game progresses and additional cards are dealt, your total card count will become more accurate. The player’s probability of winning or losing a bet will be directly related to his card count total. All bets should be based on the total card count and the aggressive or conservative betting strategy being utilized.

Learning how to count cards can definitely pay off financially, but it will take some work on your part to become a good card counter. Always remember that some dealers are very fast and you will have to match their speed to accurately count the cards as they are dealt. When you first try your card counting abilities on a live game, try to find a table with a dealer that is dealing somewhat slower than most.

It is said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Never move your lips when you’re counting cards. That’s a dead give-a-way that you’re a card counter.
